United States in the 1800s

Ambitious Democracy In America

1800- 1848

Henggao Cai

Choice 1: Tariff

Position: North

  • The Tariff helped the North’s Manufacturing Company from Great Britain

  • So they added 25% to Britain’s $5

  • The Tariff worked so well until the south argued that the South need to buy and Trade with England, but the South has to pay the extra 25% when buying from England.

v     All this information comes from American Nation pg. 312-313.

Choice 2: Turnpike

Position North

  • The National Turnpike was created in the 1790s. Then in 1806, Congress approved spending for the National Road.

  • It was to run from Cumberland, Maryland to Western Virginia.

  • The Turnpike Connected states after states.

  • It also made manufacturing easier by transporting goods everywhere in the Nation.

  • Anther good thing is that the Wagon driver had to pay a toll

  • Bad news is that freight haulers increased traffic.

  • “In Swampy areas, the roads were made of logs. These roads were called Corduroy roads because the roads looked like Corduroy cloths.

  • These roads helped wagons from sinking in. Even though it made a bumpy ride.”(Pg. 306-307)

  • They wanted to create stone bridges, but that was costly and wooden bridges rotted too quickly, so Massachusetts Carpenter created a wooden bridge with a roof to protect it from the weather. These bridges lasted much longer.

Choice 3: Admission of a State

·        If Missouri comes in then the senate would go to the South.

·        Then Senator Henry Clay, the Compromiser, says that why doesn’t Maine and Missouri come in at the same time and one as a slave state and one as a free state.

·        With the Missouri compromise comes a line that divides slave and free. The line is at Latitude 36 degrees and 30 degrees

Choice 4: Technology

  • Some of these new inventions include Steam Transport and Canals.

  • Steam Transports is River Transportation

  • Canals allow Boats to cross a stretch of land.

  • When Steam Transportation goes upstream is difficult.

  • Then the solution to traveling upstream came

The Steam Engine invented by John Fitch was extremely helpful because traveling Upstream took 17 weeks at most. Fitch opened a Ferry Business on the Delaware River, but it closed down.

  • A stump Puller was invented when they built the Erie Canal.

  • It was invented by several inventors
