What I need to know…

What I learned…

 A.  What specific rocks can be found at your National Park?  (Provide at least 2 or 3) Shist, Gneiss, and granite are the rocks at Acadia. Granite is the most common and can resist erosion.Pebbles are also present at Acadia National Park. Pebbles are smooth and nicely rounded. Limestone is also present because of the high amount of Calcium Carbonate. Gravel was also present at this national park.  Ellsworth Shist is the oldest rock from the Paleozoic Period. Now only Shist and gneiss remains.  ____________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
 B.  How did these rocks form? (Provide an explanation about how each category of rock was formed)  ____About 500 million years ago nameless rivers deposited sand, silt, and mud on the sea floor. Sediments then built up at least an inch every one hundred years. Until they exceeded the depths of thousands of feet. Pressure and heat transformed these sediments into the earliest bedrock. Gravel was transformed into congomerate and silt was transformed into siltstone by pressure. About 400 million years ago, volcanoes belched out their contents of ash, which came to rest on a sea bottom. During the time when seaweeds dominated the plant world, pressure and heat transformed these sediments into rocks known as the Cranberry Island formation.  _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
 C.  What type of ecosystem is found at your park? (Hint: Research the flora and the fauna and this will help you identify the correct ecosystem.)  __It’s mainly comprised of forest area and cold, shallow gulf environment has abundance of marine life. ___It The forest are really rugged.__It comprises of 47,00 acres. Fishing and hunting ecosystem as well. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

D.  Describe the soil found at your park in detail (composition, porosity, etc.)  EXPERT   ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________-________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
E.  Describe the sand found in your park in detail.  EXPERT  _________The sand at the beach in Acadia is 70% of sand grains are shell fragments the reminder are quartz and feldspar. Quartz and feldspar came from nearby granite bedrock from glacial deposits.  The shells are composed of calcium Carbonate, which is rather soluble in cold waters. On sand beaches is a lot of calcium carbonate because nearby waters are very productive that shell fragments forms faster than sand forms faster than fragments dissolve. It says you would have to travel all the way to Georgia to find this much calcium carbonate. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
F.  How have the flora and/or fauna at your park changed because of human actions?  EXPERT . There is only 28 species of fish, 300 of birds and 40 species of mammals. There are an assortment of animals including brook trout, peregrine falcons and bald eagles. Their 11 species of frogs, toads and salamanders live in various bodies of water in Acadia. Although Acadia appears immutable, it is in a constantly shifting, dynamic state. Weather and climate change, geologic processes, fire, and human-caused factors such as air and water pollution are only a few of the agents of change that have helped to carve the face of Acadia that we know today.  ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
